Forgotten Industries // Le Blog // Entry 007 // FI-MTM-007

Adapted from the personal statement I submitted with my application to Dominican University's MLIS program on 2026-09-30. The parts addressed to the admissions office have been rewritten so it stands on its own; the rest is as sent. — Le Sauvegarder

Around 2015 I bought a CaseLabs computer case, the high-water mark of the custom PC world I was part of at the time. After my father died of an overdose, it went into storage with everything else I could not face. It stayed there for over a decade. When I finally opened it again this year, I found that I did not want to build anything. I wanted to know what was there, where it had come from, and how to keep it from being lost again.

The years in between were a reconstruction. I started over at an opioid treatment clinic, the only place offering that care for a hundred miles, where I learned about patient relationships, boundaries, and how thin the line between recovery and loss can be. The day I administered naloxone to a man overdosing in his car, I started asking myself how much I could actually do for another person. If I was going back to school after ten years away, I decided, I should aim as high as I could. I earned a degree in biological sciences from Arizona State University and was admitted to medical school at the University of Kansas.

I completed my first year there, and somewhere in it I realized that I was no longer the person who had set out to become a physician. That person wanted to prove he could do the hardest, most selfless thing available. The person I had become had rebuilt his life around something quieter: care, attention, and the long work of putting things in order. Leaving was not a retreat from service. It was an honest reading of who I am now.

What I did next showed me where that pointed. Over four weeks, working with a collaborator, I designed L'Archive, the working digital archive at forgotten-industries.net, and built it full stack: a static site generated from durable source files, holding records of recovered machines and parts, technical notes, a provenance page, and a public source trail. Every item carries a classification, a history, and a reason for being kept. While building it I kept running into the questions this field exists to answer: what is worth keeping, how you establish where something came from, and how you make a record findable by someone who will never meet you. I want to answer those questions with training, not instinct.

That is why archival studies and digital curation read to me as a fit, not a fallback. They keep what I love about science — evidence, method, rigor — and join it to what I value now: stewardship, provenance, and thinking in decades rather than semesters. My scientific training has not gone anywhere. This year I became a co-author on a peer-reviewed article in Evolution, Medicine, and Public Health, and I want to bring that same discipline to the records that research, institutions, and ordinary lives leave behind.

What I want from graduate school is a grounding in appraisal and archival theory, in description standards, and in digital preservation practice, along with the professional judgment to apply them to collections that are not my own. After that, I want to work where science and memory meet: in scientific and medical archives and research data curation, and in digital curation, where the way a collection is designed and presented shapes whether anyone can use it. That last part matters to me. L'Archive is as much a work of design as of engineering, and I want a career that draws on both. In the long run, I would like to bring those skills to community and personal archives, the records of ordinary lives that no institution is collecting. I applied for the accelerated MLIS/PhD path as well, because the questions I care about most — about provenance, memory, and what we owe the records we keep — are research questions as much as practical ones.

At the top of my own archive is a line I wrote for myself: a thing documented is a thing not yet lost. I want to spend my career making that true for more than my own shelf. Contre l'oubli. Against forgetting.

The Matrix, Not the Pivot

Forgotten Industries // Le Blog // Entry 006 // FI-ROUAGE-006

The problem with two trains

Le Rouage routes in two places.
rouage.py
routes in Python.
train.js
routes in the browser, because the interactive dial has to work without Python running underneath it. That is a second implementation of the same stage logic — the exact duplication the rest of the build refuses everywhere else, where the roster, the ladder, the cap, and every phrase are parsed once from markdown so nothing is ever written twice.

Two implementations of the same rule are survivable on one condition: they have to be shown to agree, not asserted to. And the word for the thing that shows it turned out to matter more than expected.

Why "matrix" and not something looser

test_conformance.py
already called it "the same input matrix" before I ever named it that on purpose, which is usually a sign the code knew something before I did. Once I looked at it as a matrix on purpose, the shape sharpened:

Rows are the corpus. Every case worth checking — an utterance, an arming state, a proposal with its evidence.

Columns are the implementations. Python's train, the browser's train. Two, today.

The cell is a trace. Whatever that row, run through that column, actually produced.

The oracle is nothing more than: the row is constant. Conformance isn't a clever comparison. It's the assertion that every row's cells are equal, field by field.

The literal half — phrase matching, named routes, the cap, the seal, where a route actually ends — builds its rows by cross product: 14 utterances × 2 arming states = 28 rows, 2 columns, all 28 required to agree. The barrel's half — Stage 6, COLLECT, the stage that admits a proposal on a verbatim citation rather than a phrase match — is a smaller, hand-built matrix: 15 rows, chosen to hit every way a proposal can be admitted or refused, still 2 columns, still one rule.

What a pivot would have cost

The alternative was never "no shared source of truth" — that part was already settled by generating both engines' vocabulary from the same doctrine. The alternative was a pivot: one canonical trace format, both engines normalized down to it, one artifact per case.

A pivot collapses the columns. Once there's one artifact, there's nothing left to compare — you can check the artifact against expectations, but you can no longer catch the two engines disagreeing with each other, because disagreement was the entire question and the pivot already threw one side away before the check ran.

The matrix keeps the columns genuinely separate. Python produces its trace. The browser produces its own, independently, from the same doctrine and the same case. Nothing is normalized before the comparison — the comparison is the point. And a third engine, if one ever shows up, is a third column. Not a rewrite of the harness, not a new pivot format everyone has to be re-normalized into. That's not a coincidence of this codebase; it's why
test262
and the CommonMark spec test suite are built the same way — a shared corpus, one column per implementation, and an oracle no more elaborate than "they agree."

Where a matrix goes quiet

Equality across a row is symmetric, which means a row of two empty cells satisfies it as completely as a row of two identical, hard-won ones. A matrix can be internally consistent and prove nothing at all — every engine agreeing, at length, to do nothing.

That's the gap two more tests exist to close, and they check rank, not agreement:

test_the_matrix_actually_exercises_every_branch
walks every row's failures and confirms the full rejection set is still hit — unknown member, a prohibition offered as grounds, a citation that isn't verbatim, evidence that doesn't resolve, evidence required and never given. A matrix that quietly stopped covering one of those branches would keep passing every agreement test in the file. This is the one thing that would still catch it.

test_a_proposal_can_actually_convene_someone
checks the positive case on its own — that at least one row actually admits somebody. If admission itself ever silently broke, every "the two engines agree" test above would keep passing on two engines agreeing to admit nobody, forever, and look green doing it.

A matrix of zeros is a matrix that agrees with itself perfectly. Rank is the part that notices.

Provenance. Drafted by ATLAS from the operator's own working notes on
rouage/test_conformance.py
and
rouage/CONFORMANCE.md
during the same session the distinction was drawn in. The engineering claims — row counts, branch names, member roles — are read off the checked-in code, not reconstructed from memory.

A thing documented is a thing not yet lost.

Forgotten Industries // Le Signal // Field Observation // 2026.07.13–15

Exact nesting site withheld. Public photographs are location-scrubbed derivatives.

FIG. 01 — One adult in the middle; two juveniles at either side.

The first record began with one bird.

One juvenile on an automobile. One animal at eye level. One uncertain body selecting the next available height.

The nest corrected the scale.

There were three.

Not three birds inferred from separate appearances. One adult in the middle and two juveniles at either side: three yellow-crowned night herons occupying one structure beneath the canopy.

The first bird had seemed solitary because the encounter was solitary. The later photographs show the system around it.

01. MINIMUM COUNT

The defensible observation is simple: one adult and two juveniles in the nest frame.

The adult occupies the center. The two juveniles flank it. The archive records that age arrangement without asking the image alone to establish individual identity or parentage.

FIG. 02B — The nesting group held beneath the canopy. Site withheld.

A single encounter can become a symbol very quickly.

A nest resists that compression.

Three animals sharing one small architecture return the observation to biology: cohort, development, proximity, competition, rest, and the ordinary work of surviving long enough to leave the branch.

02. ONE AT GROUND LEVEL

Two days later, a juvenile was photographed on the ground at close range.

The photographs reveal what distance had hidden: the orange-red eye; the blue-gray base of the bill; the fine dark streaks running the length of the neck; pale marks repeating across the folded wing; long legs already carrying an adult scale beneath juvenile plumage.

The sequence does not establish which of the two juveniles this was. It also cannot prove that this was the same individual photographed on the automobile during the July 10 encounter.

The archive records a juvenile from the local nesting group. Individual identity remains unconfirmed.

FIG. 03 — Ground-level profile. Juvenile plumage remains fully visible.

FIG. 04 — Full-body observation at close range.

FIG. 05 — Attention held. Individual identity unconfirmed.

03. THE FAMILY

The word family is useful here because it changes the unit of attention.

The July 10 field doctrine followed one juvenile through a human-built landscape: automobile, roofline, higher ground. This continuation places that bird—or one like it—beside another juvenile and an adult.

One encounter becomes ecology when it is observed in relation.

The birds are not identical marks. The adult occupies the middle. Each juvenile holds a different edge of the nest. Later, one juvenile stands alone on the ground, but the earlier frame remains part of the record: the solitary encounter belongs to a larger nesting record.

The archive does not need to decide which bird was the emissary.

It needs to preserve the change in scale:

one juvenile observed → one adult and two juveniles confirmed in the nest → one juvenile encountered later

Not omen.

Population.

Not an isolated appearance.

A living system becoming visible through repeated attention.

04. DISPOSITION

The nesting site is not a destination.

Its exact location, embedded metadata, and relationship to any private residence remain withheld. The public record receives only the minimum evidence required to establish the observation.

The field rule remains unchanged:

Observe. Do not handle. Do not feed. Do not disturb the nest. Do not convert proximity into permission.

The juveniles are already performing the difficult work of becoming birds. The adult remains among them.

The archive can watch without making itself the center of that process.

FORGOTTEN INDUSTRIES // FIELD OBSERVATION CONTINUATION

Object: Yellow-crowned night heron nesting group
Species: Nyctanassa violacea
Confirmed nest count: One adult and two juveniles in one frame
Later observation: One juvenile at ground level / close range
Individual identity: Unconfirmed
The Pedestal Is the Machine Room

Forgotten Industries // Le Signal // Restoration Dispatch // 2026.07.15

The provisional Ryzen system stays on the bench.

It is not Le Rédempteur. Not yet.

Its present job is smaller and more useful: prove the processor, memory, cooling, power path, and firmware state without confusing a successful boot with a finished restoration. The Thermaltake supply, Ryzen 5 7600, and Wraith Stealth belong to a controlled validation pass. No permanent archive role has been assigned to them.

The primary object remains the white CaseLabs Mercury S8 and its pedestal: FI-CASE-001, FI-PED-001, and the recovered hardware held under FI-PROJ-001.

FIG. 01 — Recovered 2016 test-bench evidence. Historical configuration; not the present restoration state.

The division of labor

The working architecture is simple.

The main cube is the shrine. It carries the visible compute platform, reservoir, dual D5 pumps, Aquaero control layer, recovered blocks, and the selected parts whose condition and provenance justify their return.

The pedestal is the machine room. It carries the lower mechanical work: radiator capacity, power, storage, cable management, service drain, and the quick-disconnect boundary between the two structures.

The current pedestal concept divides that work laterally. One side may carry a 360 mm radiator, intake airflow, and the recovered eight-drive archive mount. The other may carry the power supply, cable and SAS routing, the service drain, and a second radiator only if measured fit and thermal need justify it.

That arrangement is not final. FI-PED-001 remains stored and pending physical inspection. Radiator placement, power-supply location, drive orientation, midplate height, and any pass-through work remain provisional until the bare structure is photographed, measured, and assembled dry.

The cooling rule

The recovered inventory contains more cooling hardware than the machine needs. That is not a command to use all of it.

The current baseline is one serviceable serial loop with two or three active 360 mm radiators. Dual D5 pumps, the Aquaero 6 XT, the EK reservoir, white Noiseblocker eLoops, barbs, clamps, EPDM service lines, sensors, and QDC isolation remain the favored language of the system—but every reused part must first pass inspection and bench testing.

The visible chamber may retain selected hardline or gold fitting details as recovered evidence. The service path below should remain legible, drainable, and repairable.

Museum artifact above. Field repair below.

The archive inside the archive

The pedestal may eventually hold a ZFS-based storage array.

That is the most literal version of the idea: the archive contains its own archive. But old drives will not be trusted merely because their age looks correct. Historical media can be documented as artifacts while practical storage is chosen by measured health, redundancy, heat, noise, and serviceability.

Spectacle does not outrank custody.

Return sequence

The next operation is not a full powered build.

Prove the provisional Ryzen bench independently.

Photograph and inspect the bare pedestal, its mounting faces, chambers, underside, casters, plates, and fasteners.

Dry-assemble the empty S8 and pedestal.

Test the AX1500i cable set, radiators, pumps, Aquaero, fans, reservoir, seals, fittings, and QDCs as separate subsystems.

Mock up power, storage, airflow, drain, and pass-through routes before drilling or cutting.

Freeze the architecture only after physical fit is known.

Build and leak-test the proof loop with the compute hardware unpowered.

Install compute and storage after the mechanical and cooling systems have earned trust.

The restoration does not need to prove itself by becoming complicated quickly.

It needs to preserve the machine, recover the method, and leave a record another operator could follow.

Old systems do not wake by force. They wake by sequence.

If you found this from a resume, a cover letter, or an application link, start here.

The rest of the archive was not built to be a portfolio. It is a record: restorations logged as they happened, field observations written before I knew what they meant yet, and dossiers assembled after the fact. This short entry is the exception. It points to five existing records and says, plainly, why they are evidence of the kind of writing I do.

Entry 000 - A Thing Documented Is a Thing Not Yet Lost - the founding entry. Establishes the voice the whole project runs on, and holds it for the length of a full piece, not a paragraph.

Entry 001 - Perspective, Peregrines, & Pang - three unrelated ideas turned into one working vocabulary. The closest thing in this archive to what an agency would call brand voice: dense material made portable.

Entry 002 - The Yellow-Crowned Night Heron - a single bird, watched long enough to become an argument about patience and unfinished form. If you read one thing here, read this one.

CaseLabs Mercury S8 Restoration - the same discipline turned on hardware instead of language: a build documented as it was taken apart and put back together, written so someone who has never touched a loop can follow the thread.

Entry 003 - L'Incident - shorter, faster, closer to a dispatch than an essay. Range, not just register.

None of it says "copywriter" on the label. All of it is the same skill: take something dense, and make it hold together for someone who was not there when it happened.

The longer archive-facing note is filed as A Way In // Le Signal Form.

Forgotten Industries // Le Signal // Reader's Note // Entry 004-S

00. Routing Note

The short form lives at /a-way-in/.

That is the application link. It is built for a reader arriving cold from a resume, cover letter, or hiring portal. It does not ask them to understand the whole institution before they can find the evidence.

This is the Signal form: the record of why that shorter door exists.

01. Why It Exists

Forgotten Industries was not built to be a portfolio.

That matters. A portfolio usually selects finished pieces and arranges them to prove hireability. This archive does something stranger and more useful: it preserves process, uncertainty, naming, recovery, tooling, and revision until the work can be inspected from more than one angle.

For a hiring reader, that creates a problem. The strongest evidence is already here, but the archive does not naturally flatten itself into "samples." It has its own shelves, its own language, and its own custody chain. A reader needs a way in.

So the short form names five records and refuses to duplicate them.

02. Five Doors

Entry 000 - A Thing Documented Is a Thing Not Yet Lost is the founding entry. It proves that the voice can hold under weight.

Entry 001 - Perspective, Peregrines, & Pang turns separate materials into a usable vocabulary. It is the clearest bridge between archive logic and public-facing voice.

Entry 002 - The Yellow-Crowned Night Heron is the field-observation proof: attention sustained long enough to become structure.

CaseLabs Mercury S8 Restoration moves the same discipline into hardware. The subject changes; the method does not.

Entry 003 - L'Incident keeps the dispatch register alive: brief, strange, and controlled.

03. Working Claim

None of it says "copywriter" on the label.

That is the point.

The common skill is not the label. It is the act underneath it: take something dense, technically or emotionally loaded, and make it hold together for someone who was not there when it happened.

The short form carries the link.

Le Signal preserves the reason.

Field Observation // Wichita Branch Research Station // 2026.07.10

∴ Therefore, now wait.

FIG. 01 — First contact. The juvenile occupies the automobile at approximately human eye level.

There is a yellow-crowned night heron nest in my neighborhood.

There is at least one juvenile: brown and heavily streaked, pale-spotted across the wings, with a dark bill, a red-orange eye, and the unfinished geometry of a bird that has become large before becoming entirely certain what to do with its body.

It was standing on top of my stepfather’s car.

I drove up calmly.

“Hello, bird.”

The bird remained.

“Look at this fucking bird.”

The bird continued to remain.

I started getting out of the car. The juvenile stretched upward, became extremely vertical, and assumed the deeply unserious posture of an animal confronted with a situation for which no inherited protocol appeared immediately available.

“Yeah,” I told it. “I don’t know what you’re gonna do either.”

We stared at one another for more than thirty seconds.

Neither party appeared to possess a plan.

FIG. 02B — Protocol unclear. Become extremely vertical. Public derivative; black-bar reveal requires C2 clearance.

01. ENCOUNTER

The photographs show the sequence.

First, the juvenile occupies the automobile beneath the archway, almost exactly at human eye level. Not hidden in a tree. Not reduced to a silhouette. Present. Close enough to see the eye, the plumage, the neck changing shape.

Close enough for two animals to become mutually aware that the other is watching.

Then the bird ascends.

From the car to the roofline. From eye level to higher ground. From encounter to observation.

A machine becomes a hill. A gutter becomes a shoreline. A roof becomes a cliff.

The animal accepts the available geometry.

It rises.

It looks again.

FIG. 05 — The available geometry is accepted.

02. TEMPORAL ALTITUDE

Earlier that night, I realized that patience provides perspective in the same way vertical height provides perspective.

Vertical distance changes the relationship between objects in space. Temporal distance changes the relationship between events in memory.

From the ground, the road disappears behind the house. From above, it joins another road. Boundaries become visible. Distances clarify. Things that appeared isolated reveal themselves as parts of systems.

Time does the same thing.

There are decisions that cannot be understood while standing inside them. There are losses that appear total only because the horizon is still too close. There are abandoned objects, interrupted educations, failed machines, wounded bodies, and surviving versions of ourselves whose actual relationship cannot yet be seen from the moment of impact.

The world may not change.

But we move.

The peregrine converts height into force. The drone becomes a pocket-sized hill. The correct angle makes the lost object visible again.

The heron offers the complementary instruction:

Do not always convert height into speed.

Sometimes altitude must be held. Sometimes the field must be observed before it is crossed. Sometimes the correct action is not yet visible because not enough time has passed.

Patience is temporal altitude.

03. THE BIOLOGIST

I am a biologist.

Bachelor of Science.

For a long time, I treated that degree as one stage in a longer sequence: a prerequisite, a platform, evidence to be submitted to another institution.

But a B.S. in Biological Sciences is not an unfinished credential.

It is a formal record that I spent years learning how life organizes itself.

Cells maintain gradients. Bodies compensate. Tissues remember force. Populations change. Organisms perceive their environments and make decisions within the limits of anatomy, inheritance, experience, and available information.

A tree is not scenery.

A bird is not decoration.

The yard is not empty merely because a human project is not occurring within it.

Everything is alive and breathing.

Not metaphorically.

Respiration. Gas exchange. Circulation. Metabolism. Signaling. Repair. Growth. Senescence. Alarm. Attention.

Every living thing is maintaining an impossible arrangement against entropy for as long as it can.

The juvenile on the car was not a symbol first.

It was an animal.

That is what permits the symbolism to mean anything.

I could see its plumage and posture. I could recognize that it was young. I could observe uncertainty without pretending to know its exact internal state. I could laugh because the encounter was genuinely funny.

But biology has never required dignity to exclude absurdity.

“Yeah, I don’t know what you’re gonna do either.”

That may be the most honest possible description of two living systems meeting.

Neither organism had complete information.

Both remained attentive.

Both adjusted.

04. OMEN

There does not appear to be a securely documented ancient omen tradition belonging specifically to the yellow-crowned night heron.

Good.

We do not need to counterfeit one.

An omen can be understood not as a supernatural prediction, but as an encounter that becomes legible at the exact moment one is prepared to receive its instruction.

The instruction is derived from the animal itself.

The heron waits.

The heron watches.

The heron uses the available elevation.

The heron does not confuse stillness with surrender.

The juvenile is not yet wearing the clean gray plumage, black-and-white face, and pale crown of the adult. It is streaked and mottled. Its shape is correct but unfinished. Its movements contain both competence and comedy.

It does not apologize for being juvenile.

It does not postpone its life until the adult plumage arrives.

It stands where it can stand.

It watches from the height currently available.

Then it moves upward.

So the omen, if I am permitted one, is this:

Do not despise the unfinished form.
Do not move merely to prove that you are moving.
Hold the position long enough to understand the field.
Use the structure available to you.
Gain height.
Gain time.
Look again.

05. SEQUENCE

I have been thinking about birds for weeks.

My aircraft were named PEREGRINE.

There is a hawk in the yard.

There is a yellow-crowned night heron nest in the neighborhood.

There is a juvenile standing on the family automobile, looking at me as though I have arrived unexpectedly in its field report.

It would be easy to force this into mythology.

That would violate the method.

The bird is a bird. The nest is a nest. The hawk is a hawk. The drones were consumer aircraft named by a human being who has loved peregrine falcons since childhood.

No supernatural conclusion is required.

And yet meaning does not become fraudulent merely because it arises through attention.

A constellation is not a physical line between stars. The line is made by the observer. The stars remain real.

The peregrine teaches the conversion of perspective into action.

The heron teaches the preservation of perspective before action.

These are not contradictory doctrines.

They are sequence.

First: the heron on the automobile.

Then: eye contact.

Then: uncertainty.

Then: laughter.

Then: ascent.

Then: the roofline.

Then: the neighborhood seen from above.

Not revelation.

Not prophecy.

Observation.

A young animal moved through a human landscape and selected successive platforms from which to see.

A biologist arrived home and noticed.

That is enough.

More than enough.

The degree taught me how much is happening.

Patience allows me to see it.

This is not yet an object record.

It is a Signal specimen: the spark captured before explanation. The incident enters the archive as an observed exchange and evidence plate, with interpretation deferred until the operator authorizes a larger record.

LE ZOOT Enters Service

Forgotten Industries // ATLAS Report // Systems // ZOOT

Signal is clean. New instrument on the line.

00. Provenance / Gift

ZOOT enters service as a coding gift from Tyler Etters / Northern Information: github.com/northern-information.

The archive records the instrument, but the originating hand is explicit. This system arrived through Tyler's craft and remains marked as such.

01. What Was Built

The archive has a new door. It is not listed with the other four, and it does not behave like a page. It lives at /zoot.

ZOOT is a reading instrument. It takes the archive's own machine record, the same index the search tools consume, every record in the collection, and pours it into a film of oil. The film churns. Records rise out of it, hold legible for a few seconds, and dissolve back in. Left alone, it will read the archive to an empty room indefinitely.

That is not a failure state. That is the design.

02. Why It Exists

The archive is built for lookup. You arrive with a question, you route to a record, you leave with an answer. Correct behavior for an archive. It stays.

But a working archive also needs a way to be seen without a question. Shelves get walked for no reason. Drawers get opened on instinct. ZOOT is that walk. Records surface on their own schedule, weighted so the small collections are not drowned out by the loud ones. Sixty-one social posts do not get to out-shout eight projects.

Oil is the right material for this archive. Every machine in the collection has left a slick on some floor somewhere. The rendering is thin-film interference, the physics of oil on water: light enters the film, reflects off both boundaries, and interferes with itself. Color from structure, not pigment. Nothing in the slick is painted. What you see is the geometry of the film.

For a project where meaning comes from the record's structure rather than its decoration, that felt correct.

03. Operating Notes

Do nothing, and it drifts. After thirty seconds of stillness an autonomous stirrer takes over and the instrument becomes a screensaver that happens to be reading the archive.

Move the pointer, and you stir the film. The fluid answers with vortices that decay in a few seconds. On a phone, drag to stir.

Catch a record by resting the pointer on it, or tapping it. The fluid stills around what you caught, and a small card offers the real page. Every fragment in the slick is a true record with a true address. Follow it, and you are back in the archive proper.

Kind is color. Cyan for object records, green for field logs, gold for projects, magenta for source evidence, amber for voice logs, paper for manuscripts.

ESC dismisses, then exits. The faint mark in the corner does the same work by hand.

04. Degraded Modes

If your instrument suppresses motion, ZOOT renders one still frame of the film and hands you the records as a plain readable list. If the shader will not resolve or the index will not load, it says so plainly and routes you back to L'ARCHIVE.

The records remain regardless. The slick is a view, not a container. Nothing lives in ZOOT; everything it shows is held elsewhere in canonical form. Lose the instrument and you lose nothing.

05. Engineering Record

No new dependencies. One hand-written WebGL2 shader, one draw call per frame, vanilla modules, and the existing archive index doing the work it already did. The film is a noise field folded onto itself twice; the text passes through the same distortion the film does, which is why a record looks submerged until it is not.

Mobile is first-class: tap to catch, drag to stir, and the instrument degrades its own resolution before it degrades your frame rate.

The archive is usually read by asking. Now it can also be read by watching.

A record that can surface on its own is never fully shelved.

Perspective, Peregrines, & “Pang”

Forgotten Industries // First Field Doctrine // Entry 001

∴ Therefore, now look.

The prelude established the origin record.

A thing documented is a thing not yet lost. The archive remembers what panic forgets. Old systems do not wake by force. They wake by sequence.

This is the first sequence after the signal check.

Not another prelude. Not another origin story. Not a clean heroic arc.

Entry 001 begins with the view.

01. Perspective

Perspective changes everything.

The magnitude of that change is directly proportional to the magnitude of the change in the view.

Your view. My view. Our view.

How far did I climb up this hill before I turned around to see?

To see.

Perspective, to me, is deeply linked to vision. When we turn around to see how far we have come up the hill, we are not looking at the same world we saw from the bottom. The land has not changed. The road has not changed. The houses, the trees, the rooftops, the power lines, the parked cars, the old machines in garages and basements and storage rooms — they may all be where they were before.

But we are not.

We have moved.

If we climb halfway, we turn around and see a modest rise. We have translated ourselves through space. Forward and up. Sagittal and coronal. X-axis and Y-axis. The body has moved through the world, and the eyes now receive a different version of it.

Now let us say we climb to the top.

The change is not merely twice the view from halfway. Elevation is not linear in the human heart. A little more height can open an entire horizon. The additional verticality does not simply add more scenery. It changes the relationship between every object in the field. Roads connect. Distances clarify. What looked random from below becomes patterned from above.

Our eyes, to see.

Our eyes.

So when we have come a very long way, we are afforded a view of a very different path behind us. Can I run one mile and still see where I began? What about five? Ten? One hundred?

Surely not.

At some point, the origin disappears behind the curvature of the life that carried us away from it.

I have spent the last six years running.

With everything I had.

Running from failure. Running toward medicine. Running from grief. Running toward proof. Running from the version of myself I thought I had ruined. Running toward the version I believed I could still become.

And now, for the first time in a very long time, I have stopped.

I turned around.

The view from where I stand now is simply beyond words.

Not because everything is fixed. Not because the climb was clean. Not because the path makes perfect sense from here. It does not.

But because I can finally see distance.

I can see that I moved.

I can see that I survived.

I can see that the abandoned things were not always abandoned because I did not love them. Sometimes they were abandoned because I was trying not to die. Sometimes they were left behind because the body only has so many hands when it is carrying grief, debt, ambition, shame, addiction, recovery, school, work, family, and the impossible demand to become someone worthy of having been spared.

But I am here now.

And the view is different.

I feel as though I could do anything in the entire world.

I know I could.

I can.

These hands will move mountains.

Not all at once.

One object at a time.

One photograph at a time.

One recovered part, one restored machine, one named piece of evidence at a time.

02. Peregrines

In pursuit of advancing my newfound perspective, I found myself gradually returning to old hobbies, interests, and earthly pursuits.

Not as distractions. Not as regression. Not as proof that I had failed to become serious enough for the world.

As instruments.

I had been living my daily life essentially in survival mode since 2020. Medical school was a lofty goal, and the rat race surrounding the application process — and before that, the competitiveness one must maintain during undergrad — is like nothing I have ever experienced.

The strange thing about survival mode is that it can look like achievement from the outside.

Grades. Applications. Interviews. Exams. Schedules. Deadlines. Metrics. Performance. Another hill. Another climb. Another summit you are told will finally let you breathe.

But inside, the field of view narrows.

You stop looking sideways.

You stop looking up.

You stop looking back.

You stop noticing the world except as a set of obstacles between you and the next required checkpoint.

I digress.

So, peregrines.

The peregrine falcon is my favorite animal. It has been since grade school. I distinctly remember Tyler and I, with Greg, deciding ours. Tyler was a bald eagle. Greg was a wolf. I was the peregrine.

I digress again.

Did you know that the peregrine falcon is the fastest animal in the fucking world?

Not the fastest bird.

The fastest animal.

A living blade dropped from the sky.

A body made for the stoop: high altitude, folded wings, absolute commitment, then velocity beyond reason. The peregrine does not simply move fast. It converts height into force. It turns perspective into action.

In retrospect, my return to droning was not just a return to an old hobby. It was not simply me buying a toy, or chasing a gadget, or trying to entertain myself after the collapse of a plan.

It was the return of vertical sight.

Remember the hill?

What if there was a view one hundred meters straight up in the sky?

What if the hill fit in your pocket?

What if it could go ten kilometers in any direction?

Consumer drone technology has come a very long way since the DJI Phantom, the first truly popular commercially available quadcopter. The old machines were large, loud, fragile, and cinematic in the way all early consumer technology is cinematic: half miracle, half liability.

Now the thing folds into your hand.

Now the eye can leave the body.

Now the hill launches from the driveway.

I named my first one, a DJI Mini 4K, Peregrine-A01.

The name was not decorative. It was operational.

Peregrine was not merely a drone. Peregrine was a method of seeing. A pocket-sized hill. A small falcon. A controlled ascent into a perspective I could not reach by climbing.

PEREGRINE enters as field system, aircraft record, crash log, loss record, and boundary marker.

And then came the roof.

The crash. The coordinates. The rain. The absurdity of looking for a lost machine from the ground while suspecting the machine was directly above me, hidden by clay tiles and slope and blind angle. The comedy of it. The dread of it. The fact that the only way to confirm the truth was to change the view.

That is the archive, too.

Not just finding what was lost.

Finding the correct angle from which the lost thing becomes visible again.

03. Pang

This archive does not begin with a clean heroic arc. Obviously.

It begins with the pang: the sharp, specific feeling of finding the machines again and realizing the things I abandoned were still there.

They remembered more honestly than I could. They waited without forgiving or accusing. They simply remained.

A case. A water block. A radiator. A pump. A fan. A screw. A motherboard tray. A midplate I could not identify until the geometry finally snapped back into place and I felt like a complete idiot and a genius at the exact same time.

Old fittings. Old plans. Old evidence. Old copper. Old nickel. Old shame.

The body kept a record too.

The body remembers what the mind forgets.

I have substance use disorder. I will always have substance use disorder. I have also been sober for almost ten years.

I will say that plainly because the archive requires plain speech.

The body does not forget. It documents in its own language: neuropathy, callus, atrophy, compensation. While my mind was trying to outrun everything I have already named, the body was quietly building its own archive of the damage.

You do not notice it happening. The adaptations become the baseline. The baseline becomes you.

What I did not know until first-year anatomy was that I had been standing on my right hip for years. All my weight loaded to one side. The result was an anteverted pelvis, a functional short leg, and a right gluteus medius and minimus so atrophied that my gait had reorganized itself around the absence.

A slight Trendelenburg. A swing and throw of the right leg to compensate for the weakness. I walked that way so long it felt like how I walked.

It was not how I walked. It was what the body had built to survive the way I was living.

The sedentary years compounded it. The substance use disorder compounded it further. Neuropathy built in the soles of my feet. Callus layered over the damage. I was walking on a reduced signal: partial contact, partial sensation, partial presence in my own feet.

I did not know any of this until anatomy gave me the reference diagram.

That is when the pang arrived in the body itself.

∴ Therefore, now look.

I started grounding. Barefoot. Deliberate contact with the earth, working the kinetic chain back up from the point where the body meets the ground.

I found the YMCA. I found the treadmill. I found the muscle group that had gone quiet, and I began, slowly, to wake it back up.

Thirty pounds gone. Stamina returning. Gait correcting.

And then the thing I did not expect: new nerve sensation returning to the soles of my feet. The callus receding. Signal coming back online in the big toes, the arches, the heel strike, the toe-off.

Full-footed contact with the ground.

For the first time in a very long time, I could truly feel the floor.

The archive has a record for that too. The body is not a metaphor in this piece. It is my body. It is evidence.

The machines waited in their cases, and my body waited in the wing with its compensatory mechanisms, and both of those things honestly remembered more than I had. Both became testimony when I finally had the correct angle to see them.

That is the pang.

Not nostalgia. Not “wow, remember 2014?” Not collector brain. Not sentimentality dressed up as scholarship.

The pang is the moment an object stops being clutter. The pang is the moment the body stops being background noise. The pang is the moment something you ignored becomes testimony.

It is the physical hit of recognition that arrives when an abandoned object, system, or body becomes evidence again. That distinction matters; clutter asks to be hidden, pain pleads to be avoided... while evidence only asks to be handled correctly.

A pang says:

There is a record here.

There is a wound here.

There is a machine here.

There is a body here.

There is a younger version of yourself here who did not know how to finish, but still knew how to dream.

To dream.

Do not throw this away before you understand what it is, the pang warns.
Do not hate this before you understand what it has carried.
Do not mythologize this before you find the whole truth.
Do not seek this truth, as substitute, before you have told your own.

Tell the truth.

The mark for pang is ∴.

Read it as:

Therefore, now look.

Not “therefore, now spiral.”
Not “therefore, stay up until 5 AM trying to solve every unresolved grief-object in the house.”
Not “therefore, immediately turn this into mythology so you do not have to feel how sad it actually is.”

Just:

∴ Therefore, now look.

Stop. See what is there. Tell the truth about what it carries.

Photograph it before you clean it, name it before you redeem it, feel the floor before you run.

Do not make it more beautiful or uglier than it is.
This is dangerous: let the object be an object first, let the body be the body first.
Then let the archive speak.

Forgotten Industries v2.0 begins exactly here: not at triumph, not at polish, not at the finished build.

At the pang.

At the moment the body recognizes before the mind has finished explaining.
At the moment the hands reach for the thing and the chest tightens.
At the moment the feet touch the ground and the signal comes back online.
At the moment the archive says:

∴ Therefore, now look.

04. Tutorial: How to Stand Inside the Pang

Feet shoulders apart. Not military. Not collapsed. Just present.
Hold the beach ball. (The invisible one.)
Arms round, not stiff.
Elbows heavy, hands alive.
The ball is light, but not imaginary.
It has volume.
It gives the body something to organize around.

Shoulders apart. Neck on a balloon.

Let the crown of the head rise as if suspended by a string, or resting on air. The spine lengthens without becoming rigid. The jaw unclenches. The eyes soften. Breathe low.

Do not chase the feeling. Let it arrive.

The pang is not a command to panic. It is not an order to solve everything tonight. It is a bell. It tells you that something has appeared in the field. Something with a little more meaning than we once thought it held. Hope waits in the wings.

Everything matters a little more than we think...

So stop.

Name the object, photograph the object, write the date.
Write what you know, write what you do not know.

Do not force redemption onto it.
Do not force condemnation onto it.
Do not make it more beautiful than it is.
Do not make it uglier than it is.

Hold the beach ball.
Neck on a balloon.
Look again.

∴ Therefore, now look.

05. Field Doctrine

Photograph before cleaning.
Tell the truth before interpretation.
Preserve the dump before curation.
Name the object before mythologizing it.
Separate evidence from memory.
Let memory speak, but do not let it overwrite the record.
Do not force redemption onto the object.
Do not force condemnation onto it either.
Stop.
Mark.
Continue.
No map is built from motion alone.

Forgotten Industries // Signal Check // Prelude // Entry 000

Reader note: death, substance use, recovery, and grief.

A thing documented is a thing not yet lost.
The archive remembers what panic forgets.
Old systems do not wake by force. They wake by sequence.

00. Signal Check

Ground yourself. Tell the truth. Dare to be brave enough to look directly at what survived.

Always tell the truth and you shall be untouchable.

That has been my modus operandi throughout my return to higher education. In 2020, near the end of the first brutal wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was just about to turn thirty years old. I had been less than a year sober from alcohol following my penultimate rock bottom, the make-or-break decision arc.

2014 to 2018, maybe 2019, is mostly unknown to me. And, to be clear, my personal story of recovery is not the focus of this archive. It is necessary background for what comes next.

What happens to the things we have left behind?
Is anything ever truly lost?
What remains, and what will be left of them?

This is not the first true entry. This is the prelude: the signal check before the archive starts numbering itself.

Early public evidence: Matthew Marx, Forgotten Industries, October 2014.

Forgotten Industries is the collective body of my work. My name is Matthew T. Marx. I established it in 2014 after the unexpected death of my father, Eric Hugh Marx, on January 10, 2014. My grandmother, Marjorie Marx, passed away weeks later in that frigid spring.

My father had nothing. He lived with substance use disorder, alcoholism specifically, and was eventually diagnosed with Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome. That condition contributed to the opiate overdose that is presumed to be his cause of death. My grandparents' estate leapfrogged my dead dad, and I found myself sitting on half a million dollars in my early twenties.

Have you ever blacked out from overconsumption?

That is the best way I can explain what happened to me next. Except I did not lose a night. I lost four years.

I dissociated fully into booze and fucking watercooling. I probably spent fifty thousand dollars of my inheritance on hardware, fittings, blocks, pumps, cases, radiators, fans, and systems I never used. Some of it became work. Some of it became evidence. A lot of it became unopened boxes and machines waiting in storage for a version of me who did not know how to come back yet.

What survives the shelf can survive the rebuild.

CaseLabs evidence, November 2014. Watercooling was not a metaphor. It was where the money went.

Recovered social-media crop: the old loop, the old excess, the old proof.

After a thirty-day inpatient program, I found myself through and out the other side of my disease. It has been years since I have had a drink. I do not keep track.

This is a blanket note of gratitude, not a credits roll. There are people whose support, love, guidance, connections, patience, and plain human steadiness helped me survive that era and move through recovery when I was still learning what recovery meant for me. I am not naming everyone yet. Names deserve care.

My mom, who is literally an angel, is the exception. Years later, when the route narrowed, she helped give me a safe and compatible place to finish the undergraduate degree I never got.

So. COVID-19. Yeah.

I was working at a methadone and Suboxone treatment center for people with opiate use disorder in Chicagoland, through recovery-community connections and my own new interest in the subject, having very recently begun to understand my own.

COVID again. Two of the three counselors I worked with died.

I lost my job.

I returned to Starbucks as a Plan D fallback. I made coffee part time for the next four years, transferred stores, and moved in with my mom and stepdad in Wichita, Kansas, away from every friend and thing I had ever known, so I could have a safe and compatible environment to finish the undergraduate degree I never got.

May 2024. I graduated from ASU with a B.S. in Biological Sciences, biomedical concentration. I had a minor in Philosophy with a focus on medical ethics. I graduated Cum Laude at the age of thirty-four. I walked the stage in Arizona with my mother present. She asked. I was happy to oblige, this time around.

I decided before the degree choice that if I was going to try to go back to school, holy shit, almost thirty and nothing to show, I might as well shoot as high as possible. I did not know what else to do, still so young out of recovery. I only knew I wanted to be better than I was.

I have always been smart, but I had nothing to show for it yet. I thrived under pressure.

Doctor?

Can I be a fucking doctor?

Turns out, yes. Yes, I could. I was accepted to the University of Kansas School of Medicine MD program, class of 2029, at the age of thirty-four. Holy shit. My class was mostly twenty-two-year-olds.

Recovery is not lightning. It is voltage held steady.

2026 intake: the machines did not disappear. They waited long enough to become evidence.

Recovered hardware, before cleaning. The archive begins before the object gets improved.

What came then?

Perspective.

Peregrine.

And Pang.

Those are not the whole story of the prelude. They are the doorway out of it.

PEREGRINE enters as field system, aircraft record, crash log, loss record, and boundary marker.

This archive does not begin with a clean heroic arc. It begins with the pang: the sharp, specific feeling of finding the machines again and realizing the things I abandoned were still there. They remembered more honestly than I could. They waited without forgiving or accusing. They simply remained.

The mark for pang is ∴ .

Read it as: therefore, now look.

Definition: a pang is the physical hit of recognition that arrives when an abandoned object becomes evidence again. It is not nostalgia. It is not proof by itself. It is the signal that something in the archive deserves to be stopped over, photographed, named, and handled with care.

Tutorial:

When the pang hits, stop moving.

Photograph the object before cleaning, sorting, selling, repairing, or explaining it.

Write the object name if you know it. If not, write what is visible.

Record the date, place, condition, and what the object made you remember.

Separate evidence from interpretation.

Then continue.

If Potato, my Shiba Inu, wanders into the frame, Potato stays in the record. He is not a random pet reference. He is lab partner, shop supervisor, sleep compliance officer, and living continuity proof. Companions are part of the evidence too.

Line open. Signal clean. What are we untangling?

That is the state of the archive now: not solved, not healed, not perfectly ordered, but reachable.

So the work now is simple.

Photograph before cleaning. Tell the truth before interpretation. Preserve the dump before curation. Publish one post at a time.

No map is built from motion alone. Stop, mark, continue.

What came next requires its own field doctrine.

Perspective changes the view. Peregrine gives the archive an eye above the hill. Pang teaches the body when an object has become evidence again.

The line is open. Signal clean. Entry 001 begins with the view.

HOROLOGY IS THE STUDY OF FUCKING TIME.
What? what is time? what even is that?
this question i pose aloud as i have oft done over the years among close friends, ….

HOROLOGY. 1. THE STUDY AND MEASUREMENT OF TIME.
HOROLOGIST: ONE // HORLOGÈRE (f) // HORLOGER (m) //

I LEARNED A NEW WORD TODAY:
(*’David Toleman, did you learn a new fuckign word today?”*)

“HOROLOGY”.
Horology is defined as: *the study and measurement of ~ time ~ …

LE VOCABULAIRE DE L’HORLOGERIE

A. ‘THE BATTERY’
B. ‘THE TRANSMISSION // GEAR TRAIN’
C. ‘THE ESCAPEMENT’ AKA ‘THE ENGINE’ AKA THE POWER DELIVERY SYSTEM.

THE BATTERY CONSISTS OF:
(USING MY VOSTOK AMHIBIA AS A LEARNING EXAMPLE .. 2409 MANUAL (VERIFY. 17 JEWELS MANUAL WIND VOSTOK AMHIBIA)
1. A COILED SPRING RESTING INSIDE A CASE THAT STORES ENERGY AS IT IS WOUND. THIS IS THE BATTERY. THE COIL SPRING SITES INSIDE
2. THE CASE // THE CASE HOLDS THE SPRING IN PLACE AND PROVIDES A VESSEL TO CONTAIN THE WINDING SPRING.

THE TRANSMISSION IS -
B. THE TRANSMISSION // GEARTRAIN
1. THE ‘GEARTRAIN’ IS THE SYSTEM OF SMALL GEARS THAT DELIVER POWER FROM THE ‘BATTERY’ (A) (LIKE THE TRANSMISSION IN A CAR) IN SMALLER ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE IN PROGRESSIVE STEPS, TO THE KEY FEATURE, AKA THE ENGINE ~~~

C. ‘THE ESCAPEMENT.’
1. THE ESCAPEMENT IS A, QUITE LITERALLY, TINY ‘TUNING FORK’ SHAPED BIT THAT IS DELIVERED A SMALL AMOUNT OF REGULATED POWER — … TICK TICK TICK TICK TICK
*TICK TICK TICK TICK TICK*
I BELIEVE MOST OF MY DEAR READERS WOULD FIND THIS MORE FAMILAR AS THE TICKING OF A CLOCK. THIS IS THE ESCAPEMENT. A LITTLE FORK THAT POPS OFF A PEG AND BACK ON AGAIN. TICK TICK TICK TICK.

OK GO

AND I HAD TO LOOK AT MY INITAL CLAUDE QUERY JUST NOW BECAUSE IT GETS SLIGHTLY COMPLICATED HERE

THE ESCAPEMENT IS A PALLET FORK + ESCAPE WHEEL THAT RELEASES THE GEAR TRAIN ENERGY IN TINY CONTROLLED TICKS INSTEAD OF LETTING IT ALL SPIN OUT AT ONCE.
2. THE BALANCE WHEEL IS A WEIGHTED WHEEL THAT OSCILLATES BACK AND FORTH AT A FIXED RATE, OFTEN 18,000 - 21,660 BEATS PER HOUR (IN SOVIET MOVEMENTS LIKE THIS ONE HERE) ..
THE BALANCE WHEEL WORKS WITH THE ESCAPEMENT TO REGULATE THE TIMEKEEPING TICKS - LIKE A PENDULUM EQUIVALENT.
3. THE HAIRSPRING (OR BALANCE SPRING) // IS A TINY COILED SPRING ATTACHED TO THE BALANCE WHEEL THAT MAKES IT OSCILLATE AT A CONSITENT RATE.

SYSOUT Register

Provenance

100% hand-authored by Matthew Taylor Marx, writing as L'Operateur / Le Sauvegarder. Repository publication, mechanical verification, and WPM calculation assisted by ATLAS / Codex.

Counting Method

Whitespace-delimited visible words in the transcription above. Timestamp labels are excluded. Bracketed archive notes are excluded.

The internal timestamp labels are preserved as source evidence: moments when the operator noticed the clock, not stopwatch boundaries.

Error-Mark Register

Cyan dotted marks identify selected source keystroke artifacts in the operator transmission. They are not corrections and do not replace the original wording; they preserve the visible evidence of blind transmission.

WPM Register

Preserved transmission count: 687 words.

Operator duration correction: 15 minutes or less.

Wall-clock floor: 45.8 WPM (
687 / 15
).

If 14 minutes: 49.1 WPM.

If 12 minutes: 57.3 WPM.

This still includes pauses, reflection, lookup, and paste correction.

If active typing time was roughly 6-7 minutes: 98-115 WPM.

Live-Chat WPM Register

Not calculated from the Codex chat stream here. The transcript provides words, but not a reliable elapsed-time boundary for the live exchange. Once a start/end interval is known, the calculation is direct:
chat words / minutes
.

Clock / Stopwatch Protocol

Invocation phrase:
allons-y
.

When invoked, ATLAS opens a live clock / stopwatch register for the operator's next composition block. The register preserves start time, end time, elapsed minutes, counted words, and calculated WPM.

[MTM INVOCATION allons-y]

[ATLAS WPM 000.0]

Verification Register

Horology is verified as the study and measurement of time/timekeeping.

Horloger is better read as watchmaker or clockmaker; horologist is the English term for a student/practitioner of horology.

Vostok 2409 is verified as a 17-jewel manual-wind movement at 19,800 beats per hour. The manuscript's broader Soviet-movement range is preserved as an operator note, but 19,800 BPH is the verified figure for the 2409.

The escapement is verified here as the pallet fork and escape wheel system that releases gear-train energy in controlled increments while working with the balance wheel and hairspring to regulate timekeeping.
