## II. Product Theory

L'ARCHIVE begins as a physical storage and display product.

The first public good is a modular cartridge that gives one object a stable
physical home, visible presentation, identifier, provenance card, and reversible
mount.

The protocol explains how to use the product.

The digital index comes later.

## III. Three Layers

L'ARCHIVE has three independent layers.

Layer I: Physical.

The box. The foam. The object. The identifier. This must still work if every
computer disappears.

Layer II: Digital.

LE-BOX-000, database, search, images, provenance, version history. Useful, but
not the archive itself.

Layer III: Protocol.

How objects enter, how provenance is verified, how revisions are tracked, how
identifiers behave, how replicas are marked, and what deaccessioned means.

The protocol is the durable layer.

## IV. V0.1 Prototype

Build a five-box physical demonstrator.

- no database synchronization

The prototype succeeds if a viewer understands one box, one object, one record,
and one provenance trail.

## V. Cartridge Contract

Each archive cartridge receives:

- top-down viewing window
- clear acrylic or polycarbonate pane
- original hinge and latch retained
- removable false-bottom tray
- reversible object mount
- printed provenance card
- CR2032 holder
- reed switch
- small magnet
- LED
- 100 to 220 ohm resistor

No wiring runs between archive cartridges.

## VII. Curator's Note: Origin of LE-TUB

`LE-TUB` entered the protocol on 2026-07-13 during provisional container
planning for larger plastic storage units.

The first proposed neutral prefix was `LE-CONT`, short for L'Archive Container.
The operator rejected the euphemism. Large Tupperware and plastic tubs were not
to be disguised as more formal boxes. They could enter custody under their own
plain name.

The resulting rule is practical: `LE-BOX` remains reserved for the green archive
boxes, while `LE-TUB` identifies larger plastic tub containers. The identifier
does not claim the contents are final, sorted, valuable, or public-ready. It
only means the container has entered provisional archive custody and can receive
a label, photograph, manifest line, and later revision.

Field language is preserved when it improves retrieval and makes the system
harder to lie to.

Do not promote it to LE-BOX-000 until the sealed state is photographed, the
object is inspected, and the condition record is stable.
